INTRODUCTION: There are numerous hybrids of Adenium and we were shocked how poorly they are catalogued in traditional reference books. The internet is full of good sites and photos of these cultivars and we have assembled this section with their aid and the advise of society collectors. The information and availability of stock is everchanging so we recommend you search for a cultivar using google.com by entering just Adenium and the cultivar name. You are bound to find a collector's page and perhaps a nursery source. Many cultivars are coming from Thailand and have very long names not easy for the English-oriented eyes and ears. We have attempted to sort some of the different spellings and spacings of the words and make some reasonable formations. You will find the names listed with and without spacing or extra letters in your searches. A good number of attractive hybrids are unnamed and sold merely as their parentage, something that is done among enthusiasts in other genera such as Clivia. Some plants are offered as numbers and crosses among the proven, numbered clones. Like many horticultural taxonomists our motto has always been: "if a plant is good enough to sell...it is good enough to be named...and vice versa". A recommended source for the rare variegated and red-leaved cultivars is www.asiaticanursery.com. Asian plant expert Barry Yinger and company consistantly provide generous and first quality plants. They are perhaps the best and most progressive importers of rare Thai plants into North America. Their nomenclature is quite solid and carefully researched. They also offer an impressive away of Thai Euphorbia and Aglaonema. Unless otherwise noted, assume the cultivar is based on Adenium obesum. |
'Almost
White' - clean white with slight ruffle and small
green throat.
'Asha'
(Arizona Group x obesum) -
light pink with darker
margin, 4-5 in. wide, slight ruffled with overlapping, rounded lobes.
Known from Dr. Ashish Hanseti of Bombay. A popular and breakthrough hybrid with
the largest flower yet seen in the genus. Since the Ariziona has obesum in it,
this is correctly considered a backcross to one parent.
Arizona Group (obesum x swazicum) -
a
cultivar group for hybrids of this cross. Typically plants are vigorous, root
rot resistant compared to species, and mostly rich pink to rose-red in flower
colors. 'Crimson Star' is one nice clone of this group. Named clones will give a
more predictable effect.
'Black
Ruby' - rose-red with distinct dark purple margins
to 25-30% of the surface. Round overlapping lobes. This is a very
stunning, wonderful combination of colors. It is not black margined but the
color is very dark.
'Blue
Hawaii ' - light purple, rounded overlapping lobes.
8cm diameter, strong plants. A unique color.
'Bolero'
-
plant strong and erect, flowers
large, dark pink, petals very rounded.
'Boyce
Thompson (swazicum) -
dark purplish flowers with bright
pink, slightly overlapping acute lobes. Known from the Boyce
Thompson Arboetum, AZ USA.
'Calypso'
(obesum x swazicum) -
bright deep magenta pink, 4cm
wide, whitish center. Strong upright plants. Named in FL USA.
'Candy Stripes'
-
light pink with darker pink to near
red stripes and sectors.
'Cherry Marshmallow'
-
plants strong, caudex rather large,
bright cherry red flowers, whitish center, pin-wheel shape.
'Chor
Monkol' - dark red with white star-type center.
'Crimson Picotee'
-
flowers white with strong
contrasting rose-red margins, about 50% of each color. Very bold and lovely
among the bicolors. It is not a subtle shading!
'Crimson Star'
(Arizona Group)
-
flowers very large to 3.5 in., dark
rose-red, at times one of the closest to a true red.
'Dan-NubANan'
-
dark
pink with lighter lobe centers. White margined leaf for extra
interest.
'Dark
Ruby' = 'Weiss Red'.
'Darng
Bang Yai'
-
new growth white speckled green,
flowers light pink with much darker, contrasting margins. Thailand mutant.
'Darng Chang Puok'
-
leaves greyish-green with wide pink
to white margins and some sectors. Chimera easily 50% of some blades.
'Darng Num Anan'
-
leaves narrower, tongue-like,
blunt-tipped, thin pink to white margins.
'Darng Tarng Chang Puok'
-
compact growth, leves oval, broadly
margined and sectored cream to white, chimera 30-50%.
'Darng Thong'
-
leaves obovate, greyish-green with
margins yellow that fade to cream.
'Desert Rose' -
common name of species A. obesum and the
same as it.
'Endless Sunset' (Arizona Group)
-
plants erect, flowers dark pink,
very large, petals rounded, blooming for a longer than normal period.
'Evelyn Marie'
-
flowers dark pink, petals round,
overall a star-like flower
'Grumbley's White' -
white, 3cm wide, greenish throat, vigorous
plant. A very popular white.
'Had
Yai' (swazicum x ?) -
bright magenta.
'Highland Red' -
red
flowers. A listed name and one parent of 'Sunset'.
'Hilo
Beauty Variegated' -
thin white margins to each leave.
Used to breed in variegation.
'Hybrid
Pink' (swazicum x obesum) -
bright pink fading lighter. A
valid name should be assigned.
'Kan
Ni Ka' - pink with darker or reddish margins and
greenish throat. Rounded overlapping lobes.
'Kao
Maoradok Lok' - white with yellowish throat. Nice glossy
leaf.
'Keaw
Sa La Pa Nouk' -
leaves shorter, rounded apex, at
first light yellow to cream, becoming flecked green. Flowers medium pink with
white throat, margins darker and undulate.
'Lipstick'
-
bright
red, long tube, 5cm wide.
'Little Ruby' (Arizona Group)
- flowers dark rose-red,
margins a tad richer, smaller diameter than 'Crimson Star' and thus more in
scale for some bonsai applications.
'Mahogany Variegated' ('Nil')
- leaves dark orangish-red,
roughly mahoghany toned, if give rich light. May have flecks of other colors.
Originated by John Lucas, FL USA and grown since in Thailand as 'Nil'. In other
words, the American originator's name is both earlier and the only valid name.
'Nil' is a rename and most importantly one not approved by the clone's
discoverer.
'Manee
Nil' - red leaf, very showy, large caudex.
If the same as 'Nil', the correct name would be 'Mahogany Variegated'.
'Mike's
White' - pure white lobes, greenish throat.
'Mombasa' -
pink with darker near red margins. Smaller
plants with good basal branching as young plants. Forms as good
caudex cultivation which is not true of all selections. Collected
in Mombasa. There are of course other plants from Mombasa but
this name is used for an A. obesum clone.
'Nap
Anan' - large red with white throat. Flowers to 3
in. wide. Has been sold under 'New Red'.
'Nat
Ti Da' - light pink or white tipped pink or white
tinged pink. Quite variable colors on one plant.
'Nil' = 'Mahogany Variegated'
'Nil
MatlaKal' - red tinged leaves and a darker red midrib.
Few if any flowers.
'Nub
Anan' - dark bright pink with reddish or darker
margins. Ruffled. Nice white margined leaf is a plus.
'Peachy
Pink' - scarlet pink with a slight ruffle
'Perpetual Pink' (swazicum)
-
flowers mostly a uniform pink, very
small throat darkish purple, blooms for a longer period. It's a very refined,
more uniform version of the species with longer displays.
'Pompadour'
-
pink
with darker to red margins, white star-type center, 10cm wide.

Flowers 10cm wide - twice species normal dimensions! It also
blooms longer, up to 10 months a year. It is related to var.
coetanum or the same as it.
'Speckled Leaf' -

rose-red tinged a faint orange
perhaps, white star in throat.
'Swazbo'
(swazicum x boehmainum) -

Cultivar names made of such hybridization of species names are
not permitted so it needs a renaming.
'Tom
Thumb' - hot pink with yellow center. Miniature type
2 in. wide flowers.
'Tony Huang Red' -
flowers a dark, rich red.
'Tricolor' or 'Three color' -
almost invariably these are grafts of three different color forms and not a true
cultivatr.

long, greyish-green, margined and sectored white. Blades are thinner than most
other known variegates.
